A bear, a lion, a giant

You have probably heard the story of David and Goliath. David was small in stature and Goliath, a hulk of a human being.

In Bible days he was called a giant.

To refresh your memory, David was a shepherd boy keeping watch over his sheep while all his brothers were at a standoff in the valley of Elah. The Philistines were taunting the Israelites hoping to engage them in a battle and win. They wanted to make the Israelites their slaves.

Amongst the Philistines was the feared Goliath. Every warrior thought, “it isn’t possible to fight him and win, he’s just too big”.

Once David became aware of the showdown, he said to those within earshot, “I’ll go after him myself”.

Faith says, “Goliath is too big to miss”.

David had a history with God. He had helped him in the past and he fully expected God to help him again. While tending his sheep one day, a lion attacked and he killed it. Another time a bear threatened his flock and he killed it too. He was certain God would deliver the giant into his hands.

Armed with a slingshot and five smooth stones, he approached the giant and yelled, “I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand …1 Samuel 17:45,46

And God certainly did … with one stone and a mighty big thud.

We may not have to fight bears, lions and giants – however we fight an enemy of another kind, an unseen enemy who taunts us as well.

David had confidence that God would help him.

David’s God is our God.

There is no doubt in my mind … if you call …  He will come through for you too.

Call to me and I will answer you …”.  Jeremiah 33:3

Dear Heavenly Father, I need you to slay a few giants in my life too. When I call, even whisper to you – your word says you hear me. I am learning to trust in, lean on, rely on, and have confidence in you at all times, even pouring out my heart before you, as You will be a refuge for me. Psalm 62:8
